It isn't necessary to use fresh paper with each drawing :)  These quick sketches are to keep skills sharp and I don't use them for anything other than this.

This was one of the quick drawings I did yesterday morning.  I have been working on the backs of old watercolor paintings just to use up some of the paper (and because I ran out of large sketchbooks) so the paper was rough and dirty in places.  She had a flower hat on which made the sketch kind of interesting.

This woman was 8 and a half months pregnant and is very beautiful.  She took a restful pose for the evening but once I finished my drawing I had to laugh because I made her look like a piece of sashimi (sushi) on a rice roll.  Good grief!

I went to the open studio drawing this week and just wanted to scribble. I had had enough careful drawing and painting and needed to let loose!

This is a detail of the drawing above. I keep saying that it doesn't matter if you draw in ink and make a mistake. Just make another line. These drawings look like contour drawings but I didn't hold myself to any rules.

The drawings above were on larger sized scrap paper that I normally recycle before I come into the house, but I thought I would share them with you first.

The model sat for 20 minutes here so I had time to fill in some of the shapes while trying to stay with interesting lines and shapes and away from realism.

People are often surprised to know that I draw with a pen.  They wonder if I am afraid of making a mistake.  With sketches that I do for for skill building, such as these, I am not worried about changing my mind about where a line should go.  Look at all the "errors" in the detail of the sketch below ... they add character!  A slightly elongated head with eyes close together (think Modigliani) or extra lines where the artist changes her mind about where the pen should go ... fascinating, no? 

This being said, if I am doing a large drawing, I may start with a pencil to get the composition on the page the way I want.  No set rules for me!
